Il-Ministru Scicluna jisħaq fuq il-ħtieġa ta’ flessibbiltà b’limiti [segwi]


Il-Ministru tal-Finanzi, Edward Scicluna, iddeskriva s-sitwazzjoni tal-Greċja bħala waħda ta’ bilanċ u saħaq li l-pajjiżi membri taż-Żona tal-Ewro – fosthom Malta – iridu jiddeċiedu kemm iridu jkunu flessibbli biex jgħinu lill-Greċja ssalva mingħajr ma jibagħtu s-sinjal li lesti jaċċettaw kollox.

Il-Ministru Scicluna kien qed jitkellem illum, it-Tnejn 11 ta’ Mejju 2015, fi Brussell fejn attenda għal-laqgħa tal-Grupp tal-Ewro li ffokat l-aktar fuq is-sitwazzjoni fil-Greċja. Il-Ministri tal-pajjiżi li jużaw l-ewro ġew mgħarrfin dwar x’qed jirriżulta mid-diskussjonijiet li għaddejjin bħalissa bejn l-awtoritajiet Griegi u t-tliet istituzzjonijiet – il-Kummissjoni Ewropea, il-Bank Ċentrali Ewropew u l-Fond Monetarju Internazzjonali – dwar il-lista ta’ riformi li l-gvern Grieg huwa mistenni jwettaq skont il-ftehim preżenti.

Il-ministri ddiskutew ukoll, fost l-oħrajn, il-qagħda ekonomika fiż-żona tal-ewro fuq il-bażi tal-previżjonijiet ekonomiċi tar-Rebbiegħa 2015 mill-Kummissjoni Ewropea, li ġew ippubblikati fil-5 ta’ Mejju 2015. Barra minn hekk, kien hemm skambji ta’ opinjonijiet dwar l-iżviluppi fir-rigward tal-inflazzjoni u tar-rata tal-kambju. Saret ukoll diskussjoni tematika dwar kif jistgħu jiġu żgurati oqfsa fiskali b’saħħithom fl-Istati Membri taż-żona tal-ewro.
Għada t-Tlieta l-Ministru Scicluna, li jinsab akkumpanjat mis-Segretarju Permanenti fil-Ministeru għall-Finanzi, Alfred Camilleri, se jingħaqad mal-bqija tal-kontropartijiet tiegħu fl-Istati Membri tal-UE għal-laqgħa tal-Kunsill tal-Affarijiet Ekonomiċi u Finanzjarji (l-ECOFIN).

 

Minister Scicluna Stresses Importance of Flexibility within Set Parameters

According to Finance Minister, Edward Scicluna, the situation in Greece is an issue of balance and the Eurozone countries – including Malta – must decide on the degree of flexibility they are willing to allow in their bid to help Greece out of its current situation.

 

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE MINISTRY FOR FINANCE

Minister Scicluna was speaking on Monday 11 May 2015 in Brussels, where he attended a Eurogroup meeting that focused mostly on the situation in Greece. Ministers from euro area countries were briefed on the state of play in the ongoing discussions between the Greek authorities and the three institutions – the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund – on the list of reforms that the Greek government is expected to complete under the current agreement.

The ministers also discussed, inter alia, the economic situation in the euro area based on the spring 2015 economic forecast by the European Commission, published on 5 May 2015, and exchanged views on inflation and exchange rate developments. They also held a thematic discussion on ensuring strong fiscal frameworks in the euro area Member States.

Tomorrow, Minister Scicluna – who is accompanied by the Finance Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Alfred Camilleri – will join his EU counterparts for a meeting of the Economic and Financial Affairs Council (ECOFIN).
