Il-Ministru għat-Trasport, l-Infrastruttura u l-Proġetti Kapitali Ian Borg u l-Ministru għall-Finanzi u s-Servizzi Finanzjarji Edward Scicluna varaw Pjan għas-Sostenibbiltà mifrux fuq tliet snin imħejji minn Yachting Malta. L-għan ta’ dan il-pjan huwa biex fis-settur tal-yachting jibdew jintużaw prattiċi differenti favur settur aktar sostenibbli u viċin tal-ambjent.

STQARRIJA MILL-MINISTERU GĦAT-TRASPORT, L-INFRASTRUTTURA U L-PROĠETTI KAPITALI U MILL-MINISTERU GĦALL-FINANZI U S-SERVIZZI FINANZJARJI

Il-Ministru Ian Borg qal li “s-settur marittimu Malti dejjem ikun minn ta’ quddiem nett biex jaħdem favur miżuri ambjentali. Is-saħħa tal-ibħra tagħna hija prijorità għalina u sodisfatt li Yachting Malta qed tieħu l-inizjattiva biex tikkatalizza bidla pożittiva favur aktar sostenibbiltà. Ilkoll nafu li l-użu tal-plastik, speċjalment f’affarijiet li jintużaw darba biss, huwa fost l-akbar problemi għall-oċeani tagħna. Inħares ‘il quddiem biex nara l-proposti differenti jidħlu fis-seħħ matul dawn is-snin, u nħeġġeġ lill-pubbliku u lil kull min jopera f’din l-industrija u kwalunkwe industrija oħra li tmiss mal-baħar biex huma wkoll jagħmlu dawn il-bidliet pożittivi.”

Il-Ministru għall-Finanzi u s-Servizzi Finanzjarji Edward Scicluna qal li, “huwa pjaċir tiegħi li nattendi għall-ftuħ tal-estensjoni l-ġdida ta’ Birżebbugia Sailing Club kif ukoll it-tnedija ta’ din l-inizjattiva ta’ Yachting Malta. Inizjattiva żgħira però li tfisser ħafna għaliex barra li dawn il-klabbs qed jgħallmu dan l-isport tal-ibburdjar lil ħafna tfal u żgħażagħ, qed joħolqu kuxjenza dwar l-ambjent.” Il-Ministru Scicluna kompla billi qal li l-industrija tal-ibburdjar hija mportanti wkoll ekonomikament għaliex taffetwa ħafna impjiegi u snajjiet diversi u kif ukoll tattira ħafna turisti ta’ kwalità lejn pajjiżna. Huwa importanti li f’pajjiżna ninċentivaw dan is-settur għaliex barra li jagħti pjaċir lil ħafna familji, jgħin lill-ekonomija timxi ‘l quddiem.

Fost miżuri oħra, il-Pjan għas-Sostenibbiltà jinkludi l-eliminazzjoni ta’ materjali ta’ plastik li jintużaw darba biss mill-attivitajiet tal-yachting, tnaqqis fl-użu tal-karti, materjali promozzjonali li għandhom użu u li huma magħmulna minn materjali riċiklati, tabelli u sinjali b’materjali sostenibbli u eliminazzjoni ta’ bżieżaq u konfetti tal-plastik waqt l-attivitajiet.

PRESS RELEASE BY THE MINISTRY FOR TRANSPORT, INFRASTRUCTURE AND CAPITAL PROJECTS AND BY THE MINISTRY FOR FINANCE AND FINANCIAL SERVICES

Minister Ian Borg said, “the Maltese maritime sector is always at the forefront working towards environmental measures. The health of our seas is a priority and I am satisfied that Yachting Malta is taking the initiative to catalyse a positive change towards more sustainability. We all know that plastic use, especially in single-use items, is among the biggest problems for our oceans. I look forward to seeing the different proposals falling in place during these years and I encourage the public and all those operating in this industry and any other industry close to the sea to also make these positive changes.”

Minister for Finance and Financial Services Edward Scicluna said that “it is a pleasure to attend to the opening of the new Birżebbuġa Sailing Club extension and the launch of this initiative by Yachting Malta. A small initiative but one that means a lot because apart from coaching the sailing sport to many children and youths, these clubs are creating environmental awareness.” Minister Scicluna highlighted the economic importance of the yachting industry in the creation of jobs and various trades and in bringing over to our shores quality tourists. It is important that we incentivise this sector because, in addition to giving pleasure to many families, it helps the economy move forward.

Among other measures, the Sustainability Plan includes the elimination of single-use plastic during yachting activities, less paper use, promotional materials that are useful and composed of recycled materials, signs made of sustainable materials and the elimination of balloons and plastic confetti during events.
